What is IL-2? Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a cytokine — a chemical messenger that immune cells use to communicate with each other. Think of it as the mobilisation order of the immune system. When IL-2 is released, it signals T-cells and Natural Killer (NK) cells to divide, multiply, and become active defenders. Without sufficient IL-2, the immune system cannot mount a coordinated response. It is the difference between an immune system on standby and one that is actively, intelligently defending.

The outcome: At 100 μg, MG-LZ8™ drives IL-2 production at 238× above baseline — confirmed by Prof. Václav Větvíčka at the University of Louisville under blinded conditions against commercial comparators. Simultaneously, phagocytosing neutrophils — the immune cells that physically engulf and destroy pathogens — increased from 31.1% to 47.2% (+51.7%). Not just on the tongue. Taste receptor type 2 (T2R) bitter receptors were once assumed to exist only on the tongue. Research confirmed in Gopallawa et al. (2021) overturned this entirely: T2R receptors are expressed on virtually every immune cell in the body — neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T-cells all carry them. This means every immune cell has a direct receptor for bitter compounds, enabling a system-wide immune response independent of the digestive pathway.

Why this matters: When MG-LZ8™ activates T2R receptors, it is signalling directly to the immune system at the cellular level across the entire body — not just in the gut. This is a third, fully independent activation pathway operating alongside Dectin-1 and TLR2. Three separate immune entry points. One extract. No other commercially available Ganoderma product has been shown to activate all three simultaneously.
A protein that exists nowhere else in nature. LZ-8 is a 13 kDa immunomodulatory protein found exclusively in Ganoderma species — it does not exist in any other known organism. But what makes it truly remarkable is this: the genomic structure of LZ-8 bears significant sequence homology with human proteins involved in immune regulation. In plain terms, the Ganoderma genome appears to have encoded a protein that the human immune system already knows how to read.

This is not coincidence. It reflects what researchers believe is millions of years of co-evolutionary interaction between fungi and the immune systems of the organisms in their environment. The result is a protein that human immune cells recognise and respond to as if it were their own — activating FOXP3+ regulatory T-cells, restoring mucosal tight junction integrity (via Claudin-1), and rebalancing immune responses that have become dysregulated.

In practice: PMC3707273 (Hsu et al.) confirms FOXP3+ Treg induction via the CD45/CD18/IL-2 pathway. Lin & Hsu (2023, PMC10094145) confirm Claudin-1 restoration after CPT-11-induced gut damage.
